DSL FAQWhy You Should Get DSL DSL is technology backed by telephone companies to provide next generation high bandwidth services to the home and business using the existing telephone cabling infrastructure. DSL to the home over existing phone lines promises bandwidths up to 9Mbps, but distance limitations and line quality conditions can reduce what will actually be achievable. DSL technologies will use a greater range of frequencies over the cable than traditional telephone services which in turn allow for greater bandwidth with which to send and receive information. DSL can provide fast, steady bandwidth for pennies on the dollar compared to other leased-line solutions of the same speed and reliability. Does DSL require special hardware? DSL needs a few important hardware items for it to correctly work. In order to separate your voice transmissions from data over the copper line the phone company will install a splitter outside your home. Also you will be provided with a special DSL modem. This modem may also include a router or hub all in one package. On the Phone Company side, every CO will have a device called a DSLAM. This will directly connect you to the backbone network of your ISP. Other than that there are really no other special hardware devices used for DSL. Of course, some circumstances may change hardware requirements. |
