Pegasus Mail

If you are upgrading Pegasus Mail from a previous version, you must install the new version in the same directory as your old version. Do not delete the old Pegasus Mail version. The new version will overwrite the necessary files, and preserve your mailboxes and settings.

  1. To start the Pegasus Mail installation program, start Windows Explorer, find the file you downloaded from the Pegasus Mail for Windows 95 page, and double-click it. This action will start the Pegasus Mail installation program. The WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box appears.
  2. Click the Setup button. The WinZip Self-Extractor will then unzip the program files. When it has finished, the first Pegasus Mail Setup dialog box appears.
  3. Click the Continue installation button. The second Pegasus Mail Setup dialog box appear.
  4. Unless you require NetWare support, click the No NetWare Support button. The third Pegasus Mail Setup dialog box appears.
  5. This is an important step. This dialog box is asking you for the destination directory into which the setup program will copy necessary files. The default directory is C:\PMAIL. If you would prefer another directory, type the name of it in the field provided. Note the name of this directory. You may need to recall it the first time you run Pegasus Mail. When you are satisfied with the name of the directory for Pegasus Mail files, click the OK, accept this directory button. The fourth Pegasus Mail Setup dialog box appears.
  6. This dialog box is asking you to choose a default dictionary for Pegasus Mail. Click either the Use the US English dictionary by default button or the Use the UK English dictionary by default button. The fifth Pegasus Mail Setup dialog box appears.
  7. This dialog box tells you the settings you selected for the installation and offers you three options:
    • Create a Program Manager Group for Pegasus Mail (Our instructions assume that you leave this option selected.)
    • Use Pegasus Mail as the default mailer for Microsoft Internet Explorer (You may want to leave this option selected if you are a user of Microsoft Internet Explorer.)
    • Do not copy Pegasus Mail files - update settings only. (You would only select this option if you wanted to update the settings of Pegasus Mail.)

The presence of a checkmark in the box beside an option indicates that it has been selected. You can toggle the options on or off simply by clicking the boxes.

Once you are satisfied with the three options, click the Install Pegasus Mail button to complete the installation. If you are upgrading from a previous version of Pegasus Mail, a dialog box (not shown here) will appear and ask you to confirm that you are upgrading. When the installation is complete, the final Pegasus Mail Setup dialog box appears.

  8. Click the Exit button. Pegasus Mail is now installed on your computer.
  9. Now that you have finished installing Pegasus Mail, you are ready to configure it.
  10. If you created a Program Group when you installed Pegasus Mail, click the Windows 95 Start button, choose Programs, then Pegasus Mail for Win32, and then Pegasus Mail for Win32. If you did not create a Program Group when you installed Pegasus Mail, start Windows Explorer, find the Pegasus Mail executable file (winpm-32.exe), and double-click it. When Pegasus Mail runs, the Setting up mailboxes dialog box appears.
  11. This dialog box is prompting you to make a choice:
    • Click the first button if you want to configure Pegasus Mail for a single (email) account.
    • Click the second button if you want to configure Pegasus Mail for multiple (email) accounts.
    • Ignore the third button which does not apply to your situation.

Different dialog boxes will appear, depending on your selection. For further instructions about configuring Pegasus Mail, click the link which reflects your choice below.
